DEFINITION
The abscess is a pocket of pus formed at the expense of the normal tissues, result of the anti-infectious defenses. It can also be formed between the two layers of a cavity, as in the pleura which surrounds the lungs, passing from a stage of effusion (diffuse), to the abscess (formation of a thick membrane which cloisonne it ).
LOCATIONS
Superficial: especially the fingers and the areas rich in hairs or sebaceous glands (parsnips, boils).Deep: possible in any organ; the gravity is related to the problems of compression, to the difficulties of access to clean it, to the repercussions on the functioning of the organ.
In shirt button: with one superficial half and the other deep, the abscess passes through a membrane by a very fine path and comes out on the other side.
HOT ABDY
It is inflammatory (red, hot, painful), caused by a bacterium, an amoeba (one of the rare parasites to trigger suppuration reactions). It forms quickly, causing swelling and pains that launch, it is well limited.
The risks are local (compression, an extension of a more diffuse infection in the form of phlegmon, fibrosis, poor functioning of the affected organs), and general (infection becoming widespread with sepsis).
Its evolution is variable: either it regresses, or it becomes encysted (and the antibiotics can no longer reach it), or it becomes fistulized (formation of a small channel through which the pus is evacuated, outside or in another organ).
The assessment: blood count to clarify the importance of infection, search for the germ by puncture, imaging (especially ultrasound and CT, sometimes MRI, to specify its location and its limits.
Treatment: once formed, there is often the only drainage, under visual control if needed or cleaning in a surgical environment to respect the conditions of hygiene. Previously, if the abscess is not yet collected too much, or in addition, we can try antibiotics and alcoholic dressings against inflammation when it is superficial.
